'NEURODIDACTICS'

A word for it, in Polish – gniot

Zbignew Tomcsak has shared this anonymous posting from the blog Memarudź.me ('Stop whingeing: a scientific lifestyle blog'). This particular posting dates from just over  ago. It is called 'Neurodidactics are nonsense, and I'm a coward'. This posting is in Polish but lies well within the capabilities of Google Translate. Its anonymous young writer echoes my own mix of despair and cowardice in the face of neurobabble. A worthwhile read for those who like to see rejection of creeping pseudoscientific nonsense.

Right on, whoever you are.

Gniot – what?

She uses a nice pejorative phrase to refer to the kind of stuff that she is opposing: quasi-wikipedyczny gniot.

Wikipedyczny, I guess, is renderable in English as 'Wikipedic', or perhaps 'Wikipedian'. They both sound pretty dismissive, especially when paired with quasi-.

As for gniot, this is variously expressed in online Polish-English dictionaries:

hot air
second-rate piece of work
undercooked cake
cake that has failed to rise properly
rubbish (trash)
junk
tosh

The central gist seems clear enough. My own favoured words in this context are tosh balderdash, drivel, gobbledegook – in extremis, bollocks.

A useful word to add to my limited Polish vocabulary

Who?

The blogger introduces herself in her 'About me' –

Born in '88, represents the mythical Generation Y
Digital native with excessive expectations for herself and the world.
She did not like working in a corporation, so she found a husband with his own company. Since then, the two fuel her capitalist aspirations
Theoretically, a psychologist, even neuro. and teacher.
PhD student, because three letters before the name not enough.
She blogs on three blogs at once, culinary too.
Perfectionist, workaholic and procrastinator
Additionally, a terrible waste of time.

I do not think that I know any Millennials. I do hope that there are many more like her.

  1. About working with their hands

We have seen that by making the hand the primary target in our treatment and educational plan, the children will develop better hand function; using grasp, release and hold, they also learn fixation, mobility and balance. These abilities combined with midline orientation will aid their concentration and attention span, their focussing and eye following. All these skills combined with better sensory discrimination will aid the child's performance in the classroom. The abnormal motor patterns have also been replaced by more normal action patterns; in short, a result succinctly expressed by Professor Peto when he said: "by treating the hand, we get a lot for nothing".
